Guangzhou

In Guzangzhou, we stayed at Sandra's - M's friend form CS - adorable and joyful Chinese girl. She doesn't travel a lot, but she gets to know the world by hosting people from different countries. Below - our view from the window.

W Guangzhou zatrzymałyśmy się u Sandry - znajomej M z CS - bardzo sympatyczej i wesołej Chinki, która niewiele podróżuje, ale poznaje świat goszcząc u siebie ludzi z różych krajów. Poniżej - widok z okna.

The city is quite nice, although its panorama is not as charming as in SH or HK. No high buildings. The IFC is there, though! :)

Miasto jest całkiem przyjemne, choć panorama nie tak urokliwa jak w Szanghaju czy Hong Kongu. Bez wysokich budynków, ale IFC jest. ;)

On the other side of the river, there are: Party Pier, lightened walls with some water around, place where parties are organized, an open space where people practise Taekwondo and, a little bit further, a spot where people dance mamba. Teenagers - as at home - play 'zośka'. And there's a colourful (accessible for visitors) TV tower.

A po drugiej stronie rzeki: Party Pier, podświetlane ścianki z wodą, przy których organizuje się imprezy, miejsce, gdzie na powietrzu ćwiczy się Taekwondo, a trochę dalej - tańczy mambę. Z kolei nastolatki, jak u nas - grają w zośkę. Jest też kolorowa wieża telewizyjna, na którą można wjechać.

One of the most important things on our 'must-do' list was to visit a tearoom (near the cathedral shown in the picture below). U is overjoyed, as she could get a whole bag of tea for 25 euros. Unfortunately, they didn't have any flowers (apart from roses). Few meters further, in the market, we wanted to buy some dried shrimps (just to taste), but a minimum amount that they sell is... 10 kg. Then, we wandered along the path which lead us to the Shamian Island resembling in architecture an European town. Nice place.

Jednym z ważniejszych punktów programu było odwiedzenie herbaciarni (w sąsiedztwie katedry ze zdjęcia poniżej). U jest wielce ucieszona, że za 100zł mogła kupić wór herbaty. Kwiatków (oprócz róż) niestety nie mieli. Kawałek dalej, na targu, chciałyśmy kupić garstkę suszonych krewetek na spróbowanie, ale minimalna ilość, jaką sprzedają to... 10 kg. Powędrowałyśmy więc dalej, a droga zaprowadziła nas na wyspę Shamian, która architekturą przypomina europejskie miasteczko. Przyjemne miejsce.

While being in Guangzhou, we decided to visit an old town (Xiguan Dawu). The way itself was pretty interesting - with such attractions as Natural Disaster Emergency Sheltering Centre and Natural Disaster Emergency Refugees Area; we also heard some familiar music sounds. When it comes to houses of the old town - they are, as one can see, historical.

Będąc w Guangzhou, postanowiłyśmy wybrać się na tamtejsze stare miasto (Xiguan Dawu). Sama droga była całkiem interesująca - z takimi atrakcjami jak Natural Disaster Emergency Sheltering Centre i Natural Disaster Emergency Refugees Area czy znajome dla ucha dzwięki muzyki, którymi robotnicy umilają sobie pracę (przez moment brzmiało to jak "Ciało do ciała"). Co zaś się tyczy domów na Starym Mieście - są, jak widac, zabytkowe.

Although on Chinese streets there are quite a lot of public toilets, apparently for some people it's too hard to use them. We saw a woman helping a small girl pee on the pavement. By the way, we also saw four Brussels-style statues.

Choć na chińskich ulicach całkiem sporo publicznych toalet, niektórym i tak ciężko z nich skorzystać - widziałyśmy panią, która pomagała małej dziewczynce załatwić swoje potrzeby do... kratki ściekowej. A propos, widziałyśmy też figurki w brukselskim stylu.

The next point of our trip was the Chen Clan Academy, where one can admire not only local beautiful buildings, but also the exhibitions of (among others) ivory, bone, wood, brick, olive, jade carving, metal craft, embroidery, lime sculpture craft, inlaid porcelain, etc. Below, there are a few examples of those artefacts (wood carving: 'Lobster and crab cage' is 220x80 cm). Indeed, we saw an Endurance Splendor of Chen Clan Academy.

Kolejnym punktem wycieczki było Chen Clan Academy, gdzie można podziwiać nie tylko tamtejsze piękne budynki, ale też wystawy, m.in. rzeźby w kości słoniowej, w drewnie, cegle, kamieniach; porcelany, produktów z metalu itd. Poniżej, kilka przykładów tych dzieł (rzeźba w drewnie przedstawiająca kraby i homary ma 220x80 cm). Naprawdę widziałyśmy splendor Akademii Klanu Chen.

We also visited two temples: burning incense sticks, throwing coins (to bring you luck), richly decorated statues, skin-chilling 'memorial hall' - a place to remember the dead.

Odwiedziłyśmy też dwie świątynie: palenie kadzideł, rzucanie monetami na szczęście, bogato zdobione posągi i przyprawiające o dreszcze "memorial hall" - miejsce upamiętnienia zmarłych.

Besides those, there's also Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in the city.

Poza tym, w mieście jest również Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.

While observing local moto-taxis, we noticed that with three people on them, there is still some place left. However, we resigned from a lift to the metro station. Apart from us and the driver, also our three backpacks were supposed to fit there (at least they didn't want to sell us a 'copy handbag' at the same time).

Obserwując tutejsze motocyklowe taksówki zauważyłyśmy, że przy trzech osobach jest tam jeszcze trochę miejsca. Zrezygnowałyśmy jednak z podwózki na stację metra. Oprócz nas i kierowcy miałyby się zmieścić na motorze trzy plecaki (tu przynajmniej nie chcieli nam przy okazji opchnąć torebki "copy handbag").

Hong Kong - sightseeing / Zwiedzanie Hong Kongu

1. The Great Buddha - really big. On the way, one passes by 12 divine generals, each of them armed and representing 2 hours from a day and a sign in Chinese horoscope.

1. Wielki Buddha - rzeczywiście duży. Po drodze mija się dwunastu "boskich generałów", każdy z nich jest uzbrojony i reprezentuje po 2 godziny z dnia i jeden z chińskich znaków zodiaku.

2. HK maybe has a good metro communication (although ferries are cooler), but buying a ticket here isn't always easy. First od all, if one wants to pay with banknotes, one has to find a machine that will accept them. When such a machine is already found, it turns out that it doesn't acceept banknotes other than 10 or 20 dollars. So, one needs to get some change. And, damn it, the machine get enough after eating one piece of paper and from then it wants only metal, so one needs to get some change, again. And then, when everything is ok, it breaks down. With 5th attempt we managed to get the tickets.

2. Hong Kong może i ma dobrą komunikację metrem (chociaż promy są fajniejsze), ale kupienie tu biletu nie zawsze jest proste. Po pierwsze, jak się chce płacić banknotami, trzeba znaleźć maszynę, która banknoty przyjmuje. Kiedy już się taką znajdzie, okazuje się, że nie akceptuje banknotów innych niż 10-cio i 20-to dolarowe. Trzeba więc rozmienić pieniądze. A potem, cholera, automat najada się jednym papierkiem i dalej chce już tylko metal, więc znów trzeba rozmieniać pieniądze. A potem, jak już wszystko jest ok - psuje się. Za 5. podejściem udało nam się zdobyć bilety. 

3. Thay have double-decker trams in HK! Besides that, the island is nice and green.

3. W Hong Kongu mają piętrowe tramwaje! Poza tym, na wyspie jest ładnie i zielono.

4. Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens - plants, birds, monkeys and reptiles.

5. Hong Kong Park - also quite a lot of birds. And lakes with (among others) turtles.

6. A date with Chinese tea - Museum of Tea Ware in Hong Kong Park. A few interesting things:
- museum is disinfected 6 times per day - in Hong Kong, it is quite common to see the information about how often public objects are disinfected, as well as how to prevent spreading of swine flu, SARS etc.;
- Naxi people way of drinking tea - roast tea leaves, pour the water on them, then dilute it (1:1) with white spirit - the name (Dragon-Tiger fight) seems justified. This way of drinking seems nicer than Lisu people's one - tea with oil and salt;
- in British breakfast, tea replaced... beer;
- Hong Kong way of tea drinking ("cultural essence of the East and the West") - almost equal parts of milk tea and coffee - it is supposed to connect the East and the West in a symbolic way: tea (China, Ceylon), milk (Western style of tea drinking) and coffee (Africa);
- 'tea' comes from Chinese (茶 'cha').

6. Randka z chińską herbatą - Muzeum Herbaty w Hong Kong Parku. Ciekawostki:
- muzeum jest dezynfekowane 6 razy dziennie - w Hong Kongu informacje o częstotliwości dezynfekowania obiektów publicznych, jak i o tym, jak zapobiegać rozpowszechnianiu się świńskiej grypy, SARS itp. to dość powszechny widok;
- sposób ludzi Naxi na herbatę: podpiec liście, zalać wodą, wywar rozcieńczyć (1:1) spirytusem - nazwa (walka smoka z tygrysem) wydaje się uzasadniona. Ten sposób picia wydaje się przyjemniejszy niż sposób ludzi Lisu - herbata z olejem i solą;
- herbata wyparła piwo w brytyjskich śniadaniach;
- tutejszy sposób na herbatę ("esencja Wschodu i Zachodu"): prawie po połowie herbaty z mlekiem i kawy, ma to symbolicznie łączyć Wschód z Zachodem: herbata (Chiny, Cejlon), mleko (zachodni sposób picia herbaty), kawa (Afryka);
- w wielu językach (choć nie w polskim) 'herbata' pochodzi z chińskiego (茶 'cha').

We are in Hong Kong! / Jesteśmy w Hong Kongu!

1. Hostel found us itself - a man asked us in the street if we needed a room. He guided us, showed us a room, gave a discount of 150 hk $ (after M's bargaining) and that's how we got a place to stay for few days in HK. Our double room is tiny and has its own bathroom, but apart from the furniture, us and our backpacks, not much can fit here. When it comes to the view from our window - we're afraid to uncover it.

1. Hostel znalazł się sam - zaczepił nas na ulicy pan pytając, czy nie potrzebujemy pokoju. Zaprowadził, pokazał, spuścił 150 hk $ (po targach M) i tak oto mieszkamy przez najbliższe dni w malutkim dwuosobowym pokoiku z własną, całkiem przyjazną, łazienką, ale w którym oprócz wyposażenia, nas i naszych plecaków, niewiele więcej może się zmieścić. Co do widoku z okna, boimy się je odsłaniać.

2. HK is much more international than SH (for U), much more colourful. But there are not many more Europeans here, so we still feel that we are on another continent.

2. Hong Kong jest (jak dla U) dużo bardziej międzynarodowy, dużo bardziej kolorowy. Ale wcale nie ma tu dużo więcej Europejczyków, ciągle więc czuć, że jesteśmy na innym kontynencie.

5. This time M is more happy about food, especially about the fact that Big Mac set is really cheap here.

6. We both are enjoying high temperature and shining sun. Greetings for those who spend winter in Poland (or another countries with cold January :) ).
