Shanghai Science and Technology Museum / Szanghajskie Muzeum Nauki i Technologii

ATTENTION: This post is quite long, a bit scattered and not very fluent, as that day was. :)

UWAGA: Ta notka jest dość długa, trochę pocięta i ogólnie rzecz biorąc: nie za bardzo trzymająca się konkretnego nurtu - tak jak i był cały ten dzień. :)

The visit in Shanghai Science and Technology Museum started not in the best way (at first, they gave us tickets for students, but then, at the entrance gate, they stopped us and made us pay for normal tickets, since we were foreigners), but the exhibitions and fun inside of the museum - excellent! (By the way, does anyone know how one may forget to charge their camera before a trip to such a place? Thankfully, M has a super advanced smart phone that can take pictures, and sometimes - even mini movies.) At the entrance - African animals, so we are welcomed by the picture (actually, an installation) of an antelope torn apart by hyenas while a vulture is lurking nearby. Next to that - a lioness with lion cubs. Further away: a big, fat, dirty hippo coming out of water, a cheetah next to impalas, branch-eating ostriches. At the other side of the alley that we walk - "Euro Asia Animals". Tiger hunting antelope-like animal, pandas, rabbits... Few meters further - America and... our European bison! (Sure, it might have been just a bison, but it is more interesting to think it was not.) We concluded it is unacceptable and indignant with that, we went to a tropical rain forest. (In some distance from there, there were polar animals - polar bear, arctic fox, ...)

Wizyta w Museum Nauki i Technologii rozpoczęła się może nie najprzyjemniej (dali nam najpierw bilety studenckie, a potem na bramce zgarnęli na zaplecze i kazali wziąć normalne, jako że jesteśmy obcokrajowcami), ale same wystawy i zabawa w środku - przednie. (Swoją drogą, ktoś wie jak można przed wycieczką w takie miejsce nie naładować aparatu? Na szczęście M ma super zaawansowany technologicznie telefon, który zdjęcia robić potrafi, a i filmy niekiedy można nim nagrać!) Na wejściu zwierzęta Afryki, więc wita nas obraz (właściwie to instalacja) antylopy rozrywanej przez hieny i czającego się obok sępa. Tuż obok - lwica z małymi lwiątkami. Dalej, wychodzący z wody brudny hipopotam, gepard przy antylopach, strusie co jedzą gałęzie. Po drugiej stronie alejki - zwierzęta Europy i Azji. Tygrys polujący na antylopę (?), pandy, króliki... (Asia Euro Animals) Kawałek dalej Ameryka, a tam stoi... nasz żubr! (Owszem, mógł to być po prostu bizon, ale ciekawiej myśleć, że jednak nie.) Uznałyśmy to za coś nieakceptowalnego i oburzone poszłyśmy do tropikalnego lasu deszczowego. (Dalej - zwierzątka polarne - niedźwiedź polarny, lisek polarny...)

So we are in the rain forest. A small elephant, something similar to a hummingbird (Ceryle lugubris guttulata), a flying squirrel, bats (Vespertilio superans) and... a trip of Chinese kids, that made us read posters - as an evacuation from their way. Thanks to that we met Mr. Chinese Pangolin (Manis pentadactyla) - a really ugly guy (though it's not in the picture).

Jesteśmy w lesie deszczowym. Mały słoń, coś podobnego do kolibra (Ceryle lugubris guttulata), latająca wiewiórka, nietoperze (Vespertilio superans) i... wycieczka chińskich dzieci, która skłoniła nas do poczytania plakatów w ramach ewakuacji z ich drogi. Poznałyśmy też dzięki temu pangolina pięciopalczastego (Manis pentadactyla) - straszny brzydal (ale to nie on na zdjęciu).

Next to one of many paths, there was a sign that we interpreted: "attention! children sliding down the rocks!". Unfortunately, apart from that, other (not the best) signs of our civilization also found their way here - rubbish left on the path... Well, it didn't take long to find an occassion for a potential revenge in the name of nature. We went through a xerophytes' path - with several cactuses and a small "palm tree" (picture below) - and a cave full of bats (one may imagine our, and especially U's, joy when we saw the name: "Bat cave") that was rather gloomy and had a screening of flying bats against the background of the moon (unfortunately, although she tried hard, M didn't manage to catch any of them), just behind next waterfall, on the walls, there were giant beetles and a mantis (so we found a real predator!), and above the room full of (likely) preschool kids there was an enormous snake - maybe anaconda, but not the green one (we know, however, that such a snake can eat an antelope, and such an antelope is a few preschool kids when it comes to sizes).

Na jednej ze ścieżek był znak, który aż się prosił o interpretację: "uwaga! dzieci zjeżdżające ze skał". Niestety, oprócz tego, wdarły się tu również inne, nienajlepsze, elementy cywilizacji w postaci zostawianych na ścieżce śmieci... Długo nie trzeba było czekać na okazję do potencjalnej zemsty w imieniu przyrody. Po przejściu ścieżki kserofitów - z kaktusami i małą "palemką" (zdjęcie poniżej) - i jaskini pełnej nietoperzy (można sobie wyobrazić naszą, a szczególnie U radość, na nazwę "Bat cave") w dość mrocznym nastroju z projekcją latających nietoperzy na tle księżyca (niestety, mimo usilnych prób, M nie udało się żadnego złapać), tuż za kolejnym wodospadem, na ścianach czaiły się gigantyczne chrząszcze i modliszka (znalazłyśmy prawdziwego predatora!), a nad salą pełną (prawdopodobnie) przedszkolaków wił się ogromny wąż - chyba anakonda, ale nie zielona (wiemy za to, że taki wąż zjada antylopę, a taka antylopa to kilka przedszkolaków, jeśli idzie o rozmiary).

And the most important part: predator in action! Well... Noone said it was easy!

I najważniejsze: predator w akcji! Cóż... Nikt nie mówił, że będzie łatwo!

On the way, one could here strange noises that resembled dinosaurs roaring (in U's opinion) or volcanic eruption sounds (for M) - well, everyone looks at the world through the prism of their own experience, right? Anyway, neither of those should be present in the tropical rain forest. Then, while walking, U found some "parasite" on a tree, and immediately heard from M: "we are going to eat that", since it was durian or nanca (which we called dunanca). We continue our visit... We understand that for the Chinese hedgehogs, cows, hens and pheasants might be exotic, but showing them in a pavilion with, among all, transgenic fluorescent plants or transgenetic rice of high yield is a bit of exaggeration. We liked the fact, that there are quite a few spots in the museum, where kids may learn something more than just how the things look (for example, the life cycle of a butterfly - on the example of European Peacock butterfly, somewhere else - toys imitating arachnids' mouthparts, puzzles being bodyparts of a spider etc.). We must admit, however, that some of those toys in a section for children were too complicated for us...There was also a nice occassion for M to fight with her fear of mantises. Thankfully for U, there were no snails. Below, butterflies at the cave's ceiling - a bit larger and more colourful than the ones we know from our meadows.

Po drodze słychać było dziwne odgłosy, które U porównała do ryku dinozaurów, M zaś - do wybuchu wulkanu - cóż, każdy tworzy skojarzenia bazując na własnych doświadczeniach. W każdym razie ani jednego, ani drugiego w deszczowym lesie tropikalnym nie powinno być. Gdzieś dalej, w trakcie spaceru, U znalazła jakiegoś "pasożyta" na drzewie, po czym usłyszała od M, że będziemy to jeść, bo to durian albo nanca (przemianowane szybko na dunanca). Kontynuujemy zwiedzanie. Rozumiemy, że dla Chińczyków jeże, krowy, kury i bażanty mogą być egzotyczne, ale prezentowanie ich w wydzielonym pawilonie z m.in. transgenicznymi roślinami fluorescencyjnymi czy transgenetycznym ryżem o wysokiej wydajności to przesada. Podobało nam się to, że w muzeum jest sporo miejsc, w których dzieci mogą się nauczyć czegoś więcej niż tylko jak coś wygląda (np. na przykładzie naszej rusałki pawik - cykl życia motyla, gdzie indziej - zabawki imitujące aparaty gębowe pajęczaków, puzzle będące częściami ciała pająka itp.). Musimy jednak przyznać, że niektóre gry w sekcji dla dzieci nas przerosły. Była też niezła okazja dla M do walki ze swoim lękiem przed modliszkami. Na szczęście dla U, nie było ślimaków. Poniżej, motyle na sklepieniu jaskini - trochę większe i bardziej kolorowe od tych, które znamy z naszych łąk.

U found her countrymen ;) As it turned out, that was nice beginning of a great horror we found later!

That is what the scientists there do - growing human ears on a mouse.

Takimi to rzeczami zajmują się tamtejsi naukowcy - hodowanie ludzkiego ucha na myszy.

There is also a room devoted to bacteria, viruses, bacteriophages and other small things. So, one can learn how does E.coli or HIV (picture below) look like. Significantly zoomed in, of course.

Jest tam też sala poświęcona bakteriom, wirusom, bakteriofagom i innym paskudom. Można więc się dowiedzieć, jak wygląda np. E. coli czy HIV (poniżej). W sporym powiększeniu, ma się rozumieć.

One of the least pleasant rooms was the one in which the exhibition was showing the interiors (organs) of sea animals. Hearts, intestines, stomachs, gallbladders, livers... Surely, it is very educational, but also disgusting...

Jedną z mniej przyjemnych sal była ta, w której eksponaty przedstawiały wnętrzności zwierząt morskich. Serca, jelita, żołądki, woreczki żółciowe, wątroby... Niewątpliwie, bardzo to edukacyjne, ale przy tym obrzydliwe...

Appalled, we went to a room which was pretty far from animal kingdom, when it comes to its topic - robots :) The robots were doing different things - some of them were playing the piano, others were dancing...

Zbulwersowane przeszłyśmy do sali dość odległej tematycznie od królestwa zwierząt - mianowicie: robotów :) Roboty te robiły różne rzeczy - niektóre grały na pianinie, inne tańczyły...

... and others were solving Rubik's cube. (There were two of them, but someone stole the cube from one.)

... a jeszcze inne układały kostkę rubika. (Były dwa, ale jednemu ktoś ukradł kostkę.)

There were also robots that practised archery. U decided to enter the competition. Well, one can guess the results (hint: does U have her glasses on? :) ).

Były również takie, które strzelały z łuku. U postanowiła się z nimi zmierzyć. Cóż, skutków można się domyślać (wskazówka: czy U ma na nosie okulary? :) ).

M, on the other hand had an occassion to shoot sth with some balls in a thing that looked like a centrifuge... Is this some kind of preparation to space wars?

M z kolei miała okazję strzelać do czegoś kulkami w czymś, co wyglądało jak wirówka. Czy to przygotowanie do kosmicznych wojen?

After getting to know the achievements of 'on ground' technology, we went on to study modern rocket technology. It's interesting that they also had a cabinet named "space food" in which one might admire, among others, canned food and pretzels :) Another thing - next to space ships, there were dinosaurs. We leave that for the Reader's interpretation.

Po zapoznaniu się z osiągnięciami technologii 'naziemnej', przeszłyśmy dalej, zgłębiać tajniki współczesnej technologii rakietowej. Ciekawe, że była nawet gablota ze "space food", w której można było podziwiać np. konserwy i precelki :) Inna rzecz, obok statków kosmicznych były dinozaury. Zostawiamy to do interpretacji Czytelnikowi.

Unfortunately, they didn't let us try on the space suit and we didn't have an occassion to know how it feels to be a real astronaut...

Skafandra niestety nie pozwolili nam założyć i nie miałyśmy okazji poczuć się jak prawdziwy astronauta...

... but they provided other attractions! Just before getting on that thing, we were wondering, whether eating big breakfast was really a good idea. But, as you can see, it was ok :) (For those who do not understand, the ending is: "So now I can be an astrochemist!")

... ale za to dostarczyli innych atrakcji! Tuż przed wejściem na to coś, zastanawiałyśmy się, czy dobrym pomysłem było zjedzenie dużego śniadania. Ale jak widać, było ok ;) (Dla tych, co nie rozumieją przesłania, końcówka brzmi: "Teraz to ja mogę być astrochemikiem!")

We also had an occassion to see a show about ecological catastrophes. As M summed it up: "this show is a catastrophe". There was also an exhibition "relicts of the past" with CDs, digital cameras etc. Interesting... We also looked for coal and crude oil! We made it! The vision of wealth fuddles the brain quickly, M wanted to use diamonds as a heat energy source ;) And what tigers like the most - volcanic eruption! :))) 8 minutes to eruption - there is noticeable gentle heat and very subtle trembling of the surface. The eruption was not very strong, though, so no losses at the end :)

Miałyśmy okazję zobaczyć również pokaz o katastrofach ekologicznych. Jak to podsumowała M: "ten pokaz to katastrofa". Była też wystawa "relikty przeszłości" z płytami CD, aparatami cyfrowymi itd. Ciekawe... Szukałyśmy też węgla i ropy! Udało się! Wizja bogactwa szybko uderza do głowy, M już chciała palić w piecu diamentami ;) No i to, co tygryski lubią najbardziej - erupcja wulkanu! :))) 8 minut do erupcji - wyczuwalne delikatne ciepło i bardzo subtelne drgania powierzchni. Jednak sama erupcja nie była bardzo silna, więc obeszło się bez strat :)

The Jade Buddha Temple / Świątynia Nefrytowego Buddy

The main attraction of the temple is a stone. Jade, to be precise. In the shape of Buddha. A sculpture, I mean... The temple is one of the 'must-see' places in Shanghai. So, let's go! As always, a very nice welcome at the entrance... (Those pleasant personages are supposed to - among other things - scare bad spirits and not let them in... Well, they didn't do well, since we went in anyway.)

W świątyni główną atrakcją jest kamień. Konkretnie, nefryt. W kształcie Buddy. Rzeźba, ma się rozumieć... Jest to jedno z miejsc, które koniecznie trzeba odwiedzić w Szanghaju. No to co, idziemy! Jak zawsze, miłe powitanie na wejściu... (Przyjemne osobistości na tym zdjęciu mają za zadanie m.in. odstraszać złe duchy i nie wpuszczać ich do środka... Marnie im to wyszło, skoro i tak dostałyśmy się na teren świątyni.)

 

There's a few (dozens of) quarters. Though it can't be named as galleries, there's a corridor like this around the square...

Do obejrzenia jest kilka(naście) pomieszczeń. Co prawda, ciężko to nazwać krużgankami, ale wokół placu biegnie taki korytarzyk...

Here, one can see censers at the temple's yard and some praying Chinese people.

Tutaj widać kadzielnice na świątynnym dziedzińcu i modlących się Chińczyków.

On the wall, some Chinese lions are sitting (an individual in the background is M, not a lion) with pieces of cloth with prayers tied to them.

Na ogrodzeniu siedzą chińskie lwy (osobnik na drugim planie to M, nie lew) z przewiązanymi modlitwami na kawałkach materiału.

Another building surrounds an interrior yard - it's from where one can get to a few rooms.

Kolejny budynek otacza wewnętrzny dziedziniec - stąd można się dostać do kilku sal.

So-called 'Memorial Hall' - all those pictures show the dead, and those plaques on shelves are in their memory. The shelves are from the floor to ceiling, and fill in a whole room of quite impressive dimensions. And a specific atmosphere might be felt, when one enters the place...

Tzw. 'Memorial Hall' - te wszystkie zdjęcia przedstawiają zmarłych, których upamiętniają pozostawione na półkach tabliczki. Półki te sięgają od podłogi do sufitu, a wypełniają pokaźnych rozmiarów pomieszczenie. Czuć specyficzną atmosferę, kiedy się tam wchodzi...

Here, there's an another room - in each of those small units there's a Buddha statue, covered with gold. (For those, who complain about too high consumption of gold eg. in churches - don't worry, it may be worse.)

Z kolei tutaj inna sala - w każdej z tym małych komórek jest pozłacany posążek Buddy. (Dla tych, co narzekają na zbyt duże użycie złota np. w kościołach - nie martwcie się, bywa gorzej.)

To see the main attraction - the jade statue, one has to get an another ticket and enter an another building. On the way, there are some wooden figures and pictures on the walls. At the place - an impressive statue in an equally impressive room. Of course, it is impossible to get close to it, since there's a fence separating the plebs from the sacrum. However, one can get closer in an another way - when one paid some money, a person being currently at service in the room, takes a bottle of water to the altar - just in case if Buddha was thirsty... Unfortunately, they don't allow to take pictures there (interested ones can see the statue here). And below, there's a picture of one of the sculptures, as tall as we are (more or less).

Aby zobaczyć główną atrakcję - posąg z nefrytu, trzeba zdobyć kolejny bilet i wejść do oddzielnego budynku. Po drodze sporo drewnianych rzeźb i zdjęć na ścianach. Na miejscu - imponujący pomnik w równie imponującej sali. Oczywiście podejść blisko nie można, bo stoi płotek oddzielający plebs od strefy sacrum. Ale, można się zbliżyć w inny sposób - po uiszczeniu pewnej opłaty, osoba obecnie przebywająca na służbie w tej sali, niesie na ołtarz butelkę wody - na wypadek gdyby Budda był spragniony... Niestety nie pozwalają robić tam zdjęć (chętni mogą zobaczyć figurę tutaj). Za to niżej zdjęcie jednej z rzeźb, mniej więcej naszego wzrostu.

When one gets tired with visiting the complex, they can sit down and watch some fish. And throw some money to their pond with hope that their wish will come true ;)

Kiedy ktoś się zmęczy zwiedzaniem kompleksu, może usiąść i obserwować ryby. I wrzucić im pieniążek z nadzieją, że życzenie przy tym pomyślane kiedyś się spełni :)

However, the most important thing in each visit to a new place is what we learn from it and what does it inspire us to. So, here's the figure that inspired U to become a lying goddess, for whom people bring food...

Jednakże, najważniejsze jest to, czego się uczymy przy każdej wizycie w nowym miejscu i do czego ona nas inspiruje... Ano, oto rzeźba, która zainspirowała U do zostania leżącą boginią, której przynoszą jedzenie...

Will it work? Well, supposedly touching the tummy of happy Buddha brings luck - we'll see :)

 Czy się powiedzie? Cóż, podobno dotykanie brzucha wesołego Buddy przynosi szczęście - zobaczymy :)

Emei Shan

One of the most remarkable days. Not because of the views, since one could hardly see anything, but because of the experience... We went by bus to some place on Mount Emei, from which we started hiking to the top. Emei Shan (Mount Emei) is one of the Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China, and - with its 3099 m - the highest of them. In 1996 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site (together with the Leshan Giant Buddha). It is known as the place of Buddha's son - Puxian (Samantabhadra) - enlightment, and that's why one can find a beautiful golden statue of him at the summit. So, as many pilgrims, we decided to hike the mountain to enjoy the view. Though, the weather was not the best for such a trip. First of all, stairs and paths were covered with an ice layer below some snow. Additionally, we walked all the way in a drizzle and fog...

Jeden ze szczególnych dni. Nie ze względu na widoki, jako że niewiele można było zobaczyć, ale z powodu doświadczeń... Dojechałyśmy busem do pewnego miejsca na Emei Shan, skąd rozpoczęłyśmy wspinaczkę na szczyt. Emei Shan jest jedną z czterech świętych gór buddyzmu i wznosząc się na wysokość 3099 m - najwyższą z nich. W 1996 roku została wpisana na listę światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO (razem z rzeźbą Wielkiego Buddy z Leshan). Jest znana jako miejsce oświecenia syna Buddy - Puxiana (Samantabhadry), dlatego na szczycie można znaleźć przedstawiający go piękny złoty pomnik. Jak wielu pielgrzymów, postanowiłyśmy więc wspiąć się na górę, żeby podziwiać ten widok. Jednakże, pogoda nie była najlepsza na taką wycieczkę. Po pierwsze, schody i ścieżki pokryte były warstwą lodu przykrytą śniegiem. Ponadto, całą drogę szłyśmy w mżawce i mgle...

The last part before the top - stairs with beautiful elephant (with 6 tusks) statues on both sides. Perhaps, when visible, one could feast one's eyes upon them and indulge in a great view. Well, we at least saw contours of some of them.

Ostatnia część przed szczytem - schody z pięknymi pomnikami słoni (z 6 kłami) po dwóch stronach. Zapewne, kiedy widoczne, zapewniają ucztę dla oczu i pozwalają cieszyć się wspaniałym widokiem. Cóż, przynajmniej widziałyśmy kontury niektórych z nich.

The track was supposed to take around 2 hours, but it took more than 3. After struggling in the drizzle on the icy roads, we finally made it. The summit! Again, lots of elephants - this time around the great golden statue...

Droga powinna zająć około 2 godzin, jednak zajęła więcej niż 3. Po utarczkach w mżawce na oblodzonych drogach, w końcu się udało. Szczyt! Ponownie dużo słoni - tym razem naokoło wielkiego złotego pomnika...

And the statue itself. We believe it was somewhere there in a cloud...

I sam pomnik. Wierzymy, że był gdzieś tam w chmurze...

At least we could see something inside temples, where we planned to sleep.

Przynajmniej mogłyśmy cokolwiek zobaczyć wewnątrz świątyń, gdzie zamierzałyśmy przenocować.

Before coming there, we asked in Emei if it's possible to stay overnight somewhere at the top and we were informed that temples offer such an opportunity. Well, they do. But apparently only during summer months. So, the last bus going down leaves in 1,5 h from the place where we arrived. We have an icy road in front of us. Plus we are soaked and pretty tired. And the visibility is... just impressive. The distance between  U and M (taking the photo) in this picture is ~20 steps.

Przed przyjazdem, pytałyśmy w Emei czy można zatrzymać się na noc na szczycie i zostałyśmy poinformowane, że świątynie oferują taką możliwość. Oferują. Ale widocznie tylko w czasie miesięcy letnich. Tak więc, jesteśmy na górze, a ostatni bus na dół odjeżdża za półtorej godziny z miejsca, do którego przyjechałyśmy. Mamy przed sobą oblodzoną drogę. Do tego jesteśmy przemoczone i zmęczone. A widoczność... po prostu robi wrażenie. Na zdjęciu poniżej odległość między U i M (robiącą zdjęcie) wynosi ok. 20 schodków.

Luckily, there is a cable car on our way. Unfortunately, the box office is closed. We need to wait. There's 45 minutes left. They finally open the box office and we get the tickets. Of course there's a huge queue to the car. Well, let's play it rough - the Asian style. Jumping over fences, some running, and pretending we don't understand Chinese - a few minutes later we're in a car, going down. There's still quite a distance to make - stairs or road. We choose road. Taking shortcuts by almost sliding down the slope and using trees to brake. Finally, we arrive to the parking, find our bus and get in. Two minutes later it leaves. We made it! :)

Na szczęście, na naszej drodze jest kolejka linowa. Niestety, kasa jest zamknięta. Musimy poczekać. Zostało 45 minut. W końcu otwierają kasę i dostajemy bilety. Oczywiście do wagonów jest ogromna kolejka. Cóż, zagrajmy ostro - po azjatycku. Skakanie przez płotki, trochę biegania i udawanie, że nie rozumiemy po chińsku - kilka minut później jesteśmy w wagoniku, jadąc na dół. Wciąż zostaje pewna odległość do zrobienia - schody albo jezdnia. Wybieramy jezdnię. Skracamy drogę przez praktycznie ześlizgiwanie się po zboczu i używanie drzew do hamowania. W końcu, docieramy na parking, znajdujemy nasz bus i wsiadamy. Dwie minuty później odjeżdżamy. Udało się! :)

Leshan - the Giant Buddha / Leshan - Wielki Budda

Leshan - a place where the most important point is the Giant Buddha. To see it, one needs to climb a small hill which has a few interesting sights and a temple at the top. Unfortunately, it was a bit foggy, when we went there, but still you can see some things in the pictures.

Leshan - miejsce, gdzie najważniejszym punktem jest Wielki Budda. Aby go zobaczyć, należy wejść na niewielkie wzgórze, na którego szczycie stoi świątynia, a po drodze można zobaczyć kilka ciekawych widoków. Niestety, było trochę mgliście, kiedy tam pojechałyśmy, ale i tak można coś zobaczyć na zdjęciach.

On the way up. U's unable to resist the chance to climb on a ... let's say: jade tiger (it was called this way). We're not sure if this also brings one luck.

Po drodze na górę. U nie może się oprzeć pokusie wejścia na... powiedzmy: jadeitowego tygrysa (tak to się nazywało). Nie wiemy, czy to też przynosi szczęście.
